Space-Saving Ethernet Signal Connection in the I&C Room

excom-Ethernet enables data-driven process optimization for retrofitting

When components at the control or I/O level are discontinued in process plants, it is often necessary to perform a basic retrofit of the instrumentation in the instrumentation and control room. Other reasons for retrofits may be a lack of functions or age-related signs of failure in legacy instrumentation. But space in the I&C room is limited, as components have been continuously added over the years. As a result, new systems need to take up less space than the existing ones – and they need to offer increased functionality. If the I/O level and/or explosion isolation of a plant must be replaced, it is advisable to use an I/O system with integrated explosion isolation such as excom. Compared to the conventional solutions with separate explosion isolation and I/O level, systems such as excom save a lot of space. In addition, excom is superior to comparable systems in terms of component density. Up to 960 signals can be processed in a standard control cabinet that is fully equipped with five excom systems.

Your Benefits

  • Fast commissioning thanks to pre-wired control cabinets and external FAT
  • Huge space savings compared to conventional solutions with separate explosion isolation
  • Digital process optimization possible through parallel data access via Ethernet
  • Flexible use of technical personnel through standardized operating logic in one system for all zones

  • There is usually little space in I&C rooms for existing plants

  • Unmatched: Five excom racks in a standard control cabinet connect up to 960 signals

  • The installation of the pre-assembled control cabinets is particularly fast with excom

IIoT-ready with excom Ethernet

When plants are brought up to date today, an Ethernet-based I/O system should be used. The Ethernet gateway from excom offers the possibility of parallel access to field-level data and analysis of this data for monitoring, diagnostics or optimization purposes in external systems. The system also ensures that access to this data is read-only. This means the control system and the processes themselves remain protected from unauthorized access. Since alternative Ethernet solutions are not yet ready for use, this makes it possible to open up plants for the development of artificial intelligence and the associated efficiency gains.

Quick installation thanks to external FAT

For retrofit projects, it is crucial that the installation in the plant can be carried out as quickly as possible. In this case, the advantage of excom is that the necessary factory acceptance test (FAT) can be carried out at Turck. Special marshaling panels or system connectors are also pre-wired by Turck if necessary, so that the time available can be used for the site acceptance test during commissioning in the I&C room.

One system, one logic

As a complete system, excom includes components for mounting in zones 1 and 2 or in safe areas. But all elements form a system that shares the same configuration and operating logic, as well as the same GSDML or EDS file and a DTM. This means that employees need to learn how to use one logic and one user interface in order to operate the system. This allows the flexible use of technical personnel in many plant areas.
