IO-LINK - New Communication on Known Routes
IO-Link is without a doubt one of the most interesting features of the SPS/IPC/Drives fair this year. Well-known manufacturers from the automation sector are working in close collaboration on this new standard.

IO-Link enables the communication between sensors/actuators and their interface modules. This standard makes use of the microprocessors that are already provided in many sensors for controlling signals, parameterisation or for storing configuration data. Benefits for the end user IO-Link offers considerable benefits in a wide range of areas without the need for any special cabling: from planning to commissioning to maintenance! The standard makes use of tried and tested industrial cables and is compatible with the conventional 3-wire interface. IO-Link sensors can be operated at any time in standard switching mode. Furthermore, standard sensors as well as IO-Link sensors can be run together on IO-Link interface modules. IO-Link enables binary process data and analog signals to be transferred. With continuous IO-Link communication, analog and binary sensors can be operated on one interface module. The cabling required for analog sensors is also considerably reduced. IO-Link also enables devices requiring free access for operation in the field to be integrated in the machine or system close to the application. Parameter definition and configuration can be carried out simply via the central control system. The IO-Link device is supplied with the necessary parameters via the service data area. The time required for commissioning can be considerably shortened if parameter data is transferred to the sensor from the higher-level control system. With IO-Link the user can also flexibly respond to new requirements whilst the machine is in operation. For example, IO-Link allows the configuration settings for a product change to be modified centrally and quickly, thus reducing expensive downtimes. The same also applies to the exchange of an IO-Link sensor for servicing. The parameters and configuration data are transferred via the central control system to the new device. As specialists for sensor, fieldbus and interface technology, TURCK will be offering in future complete IO-Link solutions with suitable interface modules and sensors from a single source. A compact module with four IO-Link ports and direct PROFIBUS interface is the first interface module scheduled. Pressure and temperature sensors, as well as ultrasonic sensors with an IO-Link interface will also be available.
